Recreation/Public Works Labourer


Permanent Position | Recreation &/or Public Works | Variable Hours


The Town of Eston is seeking a dependable, hands-on employee to support both Recreation and Public Works operations. We are looking for candidates with strengths or experience in either Recreation/Facility operations or Public Works/equipment operations. The successful candidate will be assigned primarily based on their skills, experience and operational needs, while also working across both departments as required. Training may be provided to develop skills in areas where the successful candidate has less experience. This permanent position offers varied, year-round work and requires someone who is adaptable, willing to learn and prepared to assist wherever needed.

Recreation and Rink Operations
• Operate the Zamboni and complete ice maintenance to support safe, quality ice conditions.
• Perform rink, change-room and facility cleaning and routine upkeep.
• Assist with event preparation, set-up, take-down and minor-sports or recreation activities.
• Monitor facility conditions and promptly report safety or maintenance concerns.
• Work scheduled evenings and weekend shifts during the rink season.
• Summer season; maintain ball diamonds and grounds upkeep.

Public Works Operations
• Assist with winter snow-removal operations using municipal equipment, including graders, tractors and trucks, based on demonstrated experience, competency and training.
• Assist with street maintenance, sweeping, mowing, grounds work and general municipal projects.
• Operate and maintain equipment safely and complete routine checks as assigned.
• Assist with fairgrounds, parks and facility maintenance, including mowing, trimming, waste removal, event preparation and minor repairs.
• Respond to changing weather, seasonal priorities and operational needs

Qualifications and Attributes
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license.
• Experience operating a Zamboni and/or performing rink and facility maintenance is an asset.
• Experience operating municipal or heavy equipment is an asset.
• Training may be provided based on the successful candidate’s existing skills and experience.
• Previous experience in recreation facilities, maintenance or public works is an asset.
• Mechanical aptitude and a willingness to learn equipment operation and basic maintenance.
• Ability to perform physical work indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions.
• Reliable, safety-conscious and able to work independently and as part of a team.
• Available for flexible hours, evenings, weekends, on-call rotations and winter call-outs.
Employment Details
• Permanent employment with variable hours based on seasonal and operational requirements.
• Six-month probationary period and performance review in accordance with Town policy.
• Schedules will be communicated as far in advance as practicable, generally two weeks in advance.
